In the 3D view, our treasure chest is looking good, but this is not the final look we want to show off to the world.
We want to showcase our model in its best light, including the right lighting, a pedestal and an attractive depth of field.
This workflow gives you a lot of artistic freedom to tweak the final look of your model the way that you like best.
Essential Techniques for all your Future Blender Projects
This simple, stylized treasure chest is a lot of fun to create! But understand that it's only a means to an end. The best part about this project is that it teaches you all the essential techniques and workflows for creating anything with Blender. After this course, you can apply what you learn here to endless Blender projects.
Tip: As you progress through the course. Think about how the methods can be applied to other projects. When you're done with your treasure chest, you will be equipped to tackle any object that's in your head.

The shadows on the chest from the chest are saw-shaped, but the shadows on the floor from the chest are nominal. How can this be fixed?

What's the reason for this?
Hey everyone, I've got another question. I've followed the tutorial closely several times now, and have followed along every step (to my knowledge, seems I missed a few things), and have finally made a render. But it's not quite 'finished' to my taste, anyway. Here are some photos for reference:
I want the chest to look like this in the final render.
However, it always looks like the following:
I'm not displeased with it; I think it's a good execution of the tutorial, except for two things, besides the aforementioned stuff.
The wood will NOT reflect the chest no matter what I do. I've tried changing the values on the color ramp from their default 0 a 1 between .1 and .9, dragging them around, and nothing happens. Seems the shadow cast from the light is missing, too. The second thing is the bloom - turned it on and off and there was no change in light. Turned every setting all the way to max and saw no difference. Is there a setting I'm missing or something? I really want to be done with this so I can continue learning with other projects.
Drive and save for reference:
Thanks to everyone.

HDRI image not showing up in the viewport
Hi, I'm trying to get the lighting information from the venice sunset hdri image, but it is not even showing up in the viewport. I am in the rendered view, adding the image as an environment texture. Can there be a setting that I have to enable? I tried googling this issue, the only idea I found was switching from orthographic to perspective view, but that is not my case.

My final render
Not sure if this is the place to post this, but it's my final render after completing the course up to now and playing around with the settings. It may be a bit bright but I'm happy enough with it.
Thanks to Kent for going through this all step by step. I've looked at Blender once or twice over the years but never really got into it but now (or any other 3D software apart from some quick plays with C4D). I'm hoping now, with the tutorials here, to finally like the software and learn and use it.
My concerns though are around bugs and how much it changes between versions. Even with this tutorial in 2.80 there have been a few changes with 2.81a and still some bugs. I'm going to do some character modelling, rigging and animating tutorials and then see if Blender is for me. Not sure if anyone else has any thoughts?
So, thanks Kent... I'm off to put some gold in this thing!

So every video took me roughly 4x to do (because I'm learning). So 20 minutes = 60-80 minutes :D.
How long would it take a pro to do this entire chest?

Wanted to let you know, because I wanted to download the hdri, but link seems to be broken so I got the hdri from hdrihaven.

The final result of the render tutorial does not look like the teaser image for the course. I thought I will learn how to setup lighting and render a scene like that image. Pretty disapointing.

Confused about how to edit materials in the shader editor

Confused about how to edit materials in the shader editor
I'm not sure how to word this but I've been trying to use the shader editor from the tutorial but I'm confused on how to set the objects specifically that I want to be edited. I thought if I selected all the objects I wanted to change it would work but it only works on some of them.
Is there a way I can make it so specific objects are effected by the nodes I've selected. At the moment I have nodes that are supposed to be for the wood part of the treasure chest but it's not effecting it like I expect it to.
Also, at one point I was able to change the hue saturation value of the floorboards on their own, but then something changed and now I'm only able to change the value of some of the floorboards....
This is really confusing me. It just seems really unpredictable.
Does it have something to do with how I created the shaders at the start?
