Create a Domino Effect
Rules of the Exercise
1Dominoes must be simulated using rigid body physics.
2Animation must include at least 15 dominoes being knocked over.
Set 'em up, knock 'em down
Put your simulation knowledge to the test by making a domino animation. Apply rigid body physics to the dominoes provided (or model your own) to create a chain reaction. Feel free to get creative! Domino towers, weird shapes, or use of other objects as well are perfectly acceptable. Already a rigid body master? Try mixing in one other type of physics (particles, cloth, dynamic paint, force fields, soft bodies, fluid, or smoke) for an added challenge.
- Download the provided .blend file or model your own dominoes.
- Apply Rigid body physics to your scene.
- Line up your dominoes and knock them down!
- Render the simulation and post to YouTube (OpenGL is fine, it doesn't have to be fancy)
- Click Submit Exercise at the top right of this page and paste in your YouTube link.
- Use the Box collision shape instead of Convex Hull to speed things up.
- Using the Array modifier is fine, but be aware that you'll bend the dominoes a bit and sacrifice the use of Box collision.
- Check Start Deactivated to make sure it stays standing until something else hits it.
- Real-world scale is often the most accurate, but sometimes Blender has trouble simulating really small objects. If you're getting weird results, scale everything up a bit but be sure to also increase the Rigid Body World speed in proportion.
- Once you're happy with the animation, hit Current Cache to Bake in order to save it for later.
